Behind the walls of the 505 Security Unit in Gwangju, military surveillance operated largely beyond public view. During the May 1980 uprising, democracy activists, student leaders, and members of the civilian militia were detained and interrogated here, while the compound served as an important center of military intelligence and control.

Its offices, corridors, and underground cells belonged to a system built not only to gather information but to suppress resistance. Interrogation and torture took place within spaces whose ordinary appearance concealed the violence exercised inside them.

After the unit moved away, the authority that had defined the compound disappeared, leaving the buildings behind. Empty rooms and worn surfaces reveal little on their own, yet the silence carries what the architecture cannot explain—a place where power has withdrawn, while the memory of its presence remains.
