Chota Char Dham

In the Indian Himalaya, within the state of Uttarakhand, Chota Char Dham connects four sacred sites: Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. Rivers revered as living presences descend from these mountains, and the pilgrimage carries people through a landscape where faith is bound to distance, altitude and exposure to the elements.

Pilgrimage gives belief a physical measure. The body moves through cold and steep terrain, pauses, waits and resumes its ascent. Devotion is carried in the effort of travel, in ritual, and in the company of others who share the same passage.

Here, the Himalaya gives devotion its scale. Its immense terrain holds human faith within an order larger than the individual, while every approach to the shrines remains bodily, temporary and uncertain. Chota Char Dham is a passage toward the sacred, shaped by the limits of human presence in the mountains.
