Kukukuku Tribe

The Anga people, historically known by the outside name Kukukuku, live in the upper Watut River region of Papua New Guinea. Their communities are spread across steep mountains and dense forest, where the river connects remote settlements and shapes the paths between them.

Life in this region is formed through an intimate relationship with the land. The forest, mountain paths and river are part of the conditions through which people move, sustain their communities and carry knowledge of place. This connection continues to be shaped by encounters with a wider world.

The upper Watut holds a human presence inseparable from its terrain. The river runs through both landscape and memory, joining inherited ways of life with the pressures of change. Its course gives form to a world whose remoteness has never meant separation from history.
