Naxi
The Naxi are an ethnic group in Yunnan, southwestern China. Among the Naxi, Dongba tradition joins ritual knowledge, pictographic writing and a cosmology in which human life is bound to ancestors, deities and the natural world. Its manuscripts and rites carry ways of understanding that relationship across generations.
Dongba knowledge endures through those who perform, interpret and pass it on. Its continuity takes shape in lived practice, even as belief and daily life change. What survives is held in memory and renewed through each act of transmission.
Naxi culture is shaped by an ongoing exchange between inherited cosmology and the present, between human communities and the forces of nature. Dongba gives this relationship a language and form, rooted in a tradition whose vitality depends on its place in life.
