Cyprus DMZ

The line dividing Cyprus is not simply a border. It is a space in itself.

The United Nations Buffer Zone stretches across the island, separating the Republic of Cyprus in the south from the Turkish-controlled north. In some places it opens into broad stretches of abandoned land; in others, particularly within Nicosia, it narrows to only a few metres between buildings, walls, and barricades.

For decades, this suspended territory has preserved the physical traces of division: empty houses, deserted streets, military positions, fences, barrels, sandbags, and checkpoints. Some remain almost untouched, while others have gradually become absorbed into everyday life along the edge.

This series looks at the buffer zone not only as a consequence of conflict, but as a landscape shaped by prolonged separation—a place where history has not disappeared, but continues to occupy space.
