Borders have divided communities that existed long before the lines themselves were drawn. Across Asia, ethnic minorities continue to live along remote frontiers, carrying languages, beliefs, customs, and ways of life that often extend beyond national boundaries.

These portraits were made among communities living close to those borders. Many have maintained distinct identities despite political division, migration, and the growing influence of dominant cultures.

Some of these traditions are already disappearing. Borderland Portraiture is a record of the people who remain, and of lives shaped by borders they did not create.
